With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft announced that anyone still using Windows 10 version 1803 or earlier on non-enterprise licenses would have to upgrade to version 1903 by the 12th of November 2019.
If users fail to do that, they will no longer receive monthly security updates.
This announcement applies to users of all Windows 10 versions, including:
- Windows 10 version 1803 Home
- Windows 10 version 1803 Pro
- Windows 10 version 1803 Pro for Workstations
- Windows 10 version 1803 IoT Core
It’s only been one month since the release of version 1903, and not many users have upgraded their PC, or even seem to be willing to upgrade.
This is further backed by statistics that show that Windows 10 version 1809 is still the most widely used version on the market as of now.
Because user tendency is to stick with what they already know and are familiar with, it isn’t all that hard to believe not many people will upgrade their computers.
It’s forced upgrade time
As a way to counteract this phenomenon, Microsoft decided to use an AI system to install Windows 10 OS to 1903 whether the user likes it or not.
Check out these quick solutions to block automatic updates on Windows 10.
An official post from Microsoft states that:
What this means for users is that they will no longer be able to postpone Windows updates like they did so far. Whether they want it or not, their system will be upgraded to the latest OS version by November 12th, 2019.
We are beginning to train the machine learning based rollout process to update devices running the April 2018 Update, and earlier versions of Windows 10.
User backlash was fast to appear as customers thought this was yet another attempt at invading user privacy. They even gave Windows 10 v1809 as an example when many users lost access to some of their files once they completed the upgrade.
However, Microsoft stated the AI is still in development. The company confirmed it would use AI-based upgrade tactics only after they’re 100% sure the latest OS version is a bug-free one.
