The release of the Steam October 2017 hardware statistics shows us that Windows 7 is now the most popular version of Windows amongst their users. Last month, however, it was second to Windows 10.

According to the data, usage stats for Windows 7 seem to have gone up around 23%, while Windows 10 usage seems to have fallen by 17%. This difference has sparked a debate among fans as to the reason why.

Steam and Windows 10 have a history of fallouts

According to the Microsoft forum site, Windows 10 users have experienced many difficulties with downloading and updating Steam games that worked on Windows 7.

Some users want to blame Microsoft for making Windows 10 incompatible with Steam, while others have stated that it is Steam who should fix its software. Here is what one user on Microsoft forums had to say:

Could China have influenced the Windows 7 increase?

According to Steam’s statistics, the use of Simplified Chinese has seen a dramatic 56% increase on the Steam site, most notably in games like Football Manager 2017. This has left many wondering: why the hype in China all of a sudden?

Yes, Win10 and Steam don’t play well together. Constant errors.

Have to say this is NOT a Windows issue, but a lame Steam application issue.

Steam has a LONG history of issues, as does Windows, but the bottom line is – you have to make the application work with the OS, not the other way around.

It is believed that Chinese gamers tend to prefer Windows 7 because of its ease of piracy. If a sudden mad rush of gaming in China has flooded the Steam site, it could be the reason why Windows 7 is now in the number one spot.

Whatever the reason is, it is something that both Steam and Microsoft should take notice of in order to create a solution where everyone is happy. In the end, we all just want to play our games on the operating system we feel the most comfortable with.
