If you are a Windows or Linux user, then you already know that there aren’t many options for decent text editors with which you can write. The good news is that Automattic, the developer behind WordPress, released a free text editor named Simplenote for both Linux and Windows. It’s been available for other platforms for quite some time and with its current release, we’re sure that many users will be very happy with this option.

Simplenote will sync all your notes across devices and supports Markdown, a feature that lets you easily format text and tag your notes, making it easier for you to find them later. In addition, the application will auto-save your work in order to make sure that you don’t lose any important information. A slew of publishing tools will upload your notes to the Web directly from the application. However, if you want to keep your notes private or to send them to someone, you can just email them.

The Simplenote application comes with a “scattered” interface that shows a toolbar, a list of your notes and, of course, space for you to write. The option to You will be able to choose from dark or light themes and adjust font among other things: the application is minimal but does its job perfectly.

Keep in mind that both the Linux and Windows versions of Simplenote are open source, which means that you will be able to customize the application as you wish by playing with the code.
