Deluge is a BitTorrent client featuring an elegant user interface and third-party plugin support that grew quite popular in the latter half of the 2010s. Its open-source design allows it to run on a variety of desktop environments.

But just as with any other torrent client, a VPN is strongly recommended. Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN encrypts your internet connection and routes it through a remote server in a location of your choosing.

Here’s why you should use a VPN when torrenting with Deluge:

  • You value your privacy and don’t want your internet service provider to see what you are downloading
  • Other torrenters in a swarm cannot see your real IP address, which has been replaced by that of the VPN server

These two benefits ensure your torrenting activity is both secure and private. But not all VPNs are the same.

IMPORTANT: Ensure you only torrent content you have the legal right to access.

Deluge VPN setup guide

Using a VPN with Deluge is easy and doesn’t require any configuration changes in the Deluge app.

Here’s how to setup a VPN with Deluge:

  • Sign up for, download, and install one of the recommended VPNs above.
  • Open the VPN app and select a torrent-friendly server.
  • In the VPN app settings, be sure your kill switch is enabled.
  • Hit the Connect button and wait for the connection to complete.

And that’s all there is to it! All data going to and from your PC is encrypted and routed through the VPN server. If you want, you can also configure split tunneling so that only Deluge torrent traffic goes through the VPN.

  • Open your VPN app and connect to a server using the same steps laid out above.
  • Open a search engine and enter the query, “what’s my IP address?” Take note of your VPN’s IP address, which is a set of numbers and decimals.
  • Open Deluge.
  • Go to Edit > Preferences.
  • Click the Network tab.
  • Under Interface, enter the VPN’s IP address from step #2.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Deluge is now bound to that IP address so that it will only download when connected to the VPN. Note that you might not get the same IP address when you connect to the VPN again, even if it’s the same server location, so you might need to update the IP address in your Deluge settings each time you connect.
