Sonos offers a range of quality smart speakers, designed with the audiophile in mind. Additionally, some models provide native support for Alexa and Google assistant, providing the additional convenience of voice commands. But can you pair certain Sonos models with Apple’s HomePod, too, to integrate with Siri?

Sonos speakers can be paired with Apple’s HomePods; however, only AirPlay 2-enabled devices are compatible. With the Home app, connecting your Sonos speakers to a HomePod is intuitive and user-friendly.

Before pairing your Sonos speakers with a HomePod device, there are a few requirements to get set up. This article will provide an in-depth look into pairing Sonos devices with a HomePod and some tips to get you started.

Sonos Speakers Compatible with HomePod

For a Sonos device to pair with a HomePod, it must be compatible with AirPlay 2, which allows users to stream music to multiple devices (including the HomePod). Here are the Sonos speakers that are currently AirPlay 2-enabled and compatible with Apple’s HomePod:

Now that you have your Sonos device ready to go, let’s take a look at how you can pair your device with a HomePod.

How to Use Sonos Speakers with the HomePod

If you have an AirPlay 2-enabled Sonos device, you’re in luck. Setup and configuration are intuitive and straightforward with the HomePod.

Before getting started, you’ll want to ensure that all your devices are up to date and running the latest available software; this will ensure that your system is running compatible software.

Connecting with the Home App

For your Sonos device to communicate with the HomePod, you first need to add it to the Home App from your mobile iOS device. Here are some initial steps to get you started:

  • Open the Home app on your iOS device, and touch the “+” symbol to add a new device.Select “Add Accessory” and enter the 8 or 9 digit code provided by your Sonos instructions. (Note: If you no longer have your Sonos code, you can choose “Don’t Have a Code” or “Can’t Scan?”)Tap the Sonos speaker to confirm it’s ready to sync. It will then automatically connect to the Home App.

Once your Sonos device is connected, you’ll want to rename the room to which it’s assigned to keep your connected devices organized; this will also help specify which device you want to use when talking to Siri.

For example, you can issue a voice command like “Hey Siri, play [song title] in the living room,” depending on the Sonos speaker you have assigned via the Home app.

Setting Up AirPlay 2

With the original version of AirPlay, users could only pair one speaker at a time. However, with AirPlay 2, you can connect multiple speakers, allowing you to play music in different locations throughout your house.

Additionally, AirPlay 2 offers the ability to integrate speakers from different manufacturers. Before this feature, Sonos speakers could only communicate with other Sonos devices, limiting your system’s configuration potential.

Typically, speakers from different manufacturers aren’t natively compatible, but AirPlay 2 changes that.

Here are some steps to get you started setting up AirPlay 2 on your Sonos device:

  • First, open the Sonos app from your mobile device (make sure the app is up to date).Next, open AirPlay 2 on your iOS device and tap the AirPlay icon. You will then see your Sonos speakers on the AirPlay list. Then, simply select the speakers you would like to play music from (you can even choose multiple speakers!)

Once you have your Sonos device connected to the Home App and enabled AirPlay 2, you’re ready to start using voice commands to control your system. Additionally, you can play audio from multiple devices in your house, all accessible through AirPlay 2.

Play All Feature

A particularly useful feature is HomePod’s ability to play the same content on different devices simultaneously. Once you’ve added your Sonos speakers to the Home app, you can now play music on multiple devices connected to the HomePod:

  • On your iOS device, swipe up to access the Control Center.Tap the “Speaker Selection Button” within the Now Playing widget.Press the AirPlay button and select both the Sonos speaker(s) and HomePod speaker.

With “Play All,” you can play music throughout your house using multiple speakers all connected via the Home app.

In Summary

Many Sonos speakers and devices can pair with Apple’s HomePod with just a few intuitive setup steps. Users can also play music from multiple devices in their house with the AirPlay 2 interface. Though not all Sonos models are compatible, the ability to control your audio with Apple’s extensive interface is a selling point for many.
