CCleaner, the temporary file cleaner for Windows brings a new privacy page targeting increased control for users over the software’s data collection policy. CCleaner version 5.43.6520 was launched on May 23, and this latest version comes with three notable changes. It removes font cache cleaning temporarily due to a compatibility issue with Windows 10 version 1803, it adds a new preference to select detail level of displayed results following cleanup, and it comes with a new privacy menu.
Ccleaner Privacy page
You’ll find the new privacy page by heading over to Options – Privacy in the program’s interface. The menu will list the following options:
- Allow usage data to be shared with 3rd parties for analytics purposes.
- Show offers for our other products.
The free version comes with both these options checked by default. You’ll see the checkboxes next to these options, and you may think that all you have to do is click on them to change something, but this does nothing for the moment.
It’s worth noting that the Privacy settings are not available for Free users and Piriform announced that they don’t collect any personal data. In other words, free users are basically anonymous.
Users can disable sharing of data with third-parties
The privacy policy states that users can disable the sharing of data with third-parties, but Piriform didn’t explain why the new privacy page was added to the app since they claim that they’re not sharing any information. All this may suggest that the change has to do something with the GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation that recently came into effect.
You can read the available information regarding how CCleaner uses your data that they collect in the official notes.
