Is your Dell PC running a version of Windows showing symptoms of hardware failure? Want to check if there is an issue with CPU, RAM, graphics card or hard drive/SSD? In this guide, we will see how to check your Dell PC for issues with a simple scan.

Just like other PC manufacturers, Dell also offers PC diagnostics tools to diagnose hardware issues. Dell Quick Test scans your Dell PC’s processor, memory, hard drive, and optical drive for errors, and tries to fix those errors automatically. If it couldn’t fix an error, it will guide you to troubleshooting steps and also helps you get replacement parts if your PC is under warranty.

Using Dell Quick Test is quite simple. But if you want step-by-step direction, here is how to check your Dell PC for CPU, RAM, hard drive and disc drive errors.

Note that Dell PCs are shipped with a tool called Dell SupportAssist. You can always use Dell SupportAssist to scan your hardware for errors. If you have uninstalled Dell SupportAssist, you can use Quick Test to check your PC’s hardware for issues.

NOTE 1: We recommend you save your work and close running programs, if any.

NOTE 2: On some laptops, Dell Quick Test might take close to thirty minutes to finish all scans. So run this tool only when you have enough free time and be sure to connect to your laptop to the power source.

Check Dell PC for CPU, RAM & hard drive issues

Step 1: Visit this diagnostics page of Dell and then click Run Quick Test button to download the setup file.

Step 2: Run the setup file. It’s important to note that the Quick Test automatically installs Dell SupportAssist program if it’s not already installed on your PC.

Step 3: The Quick Test will start scanning your PC’s hardware now. It runs various tests for the processor, RAM, DVD drive, hard drive, and graphics card. The process might take 10 to 20 minutes.

NOTE: Your PC’s screen might start flickering for a while when the video/graphics test is being carried out.

For instance, it runs register test, level 2 cache test, math register test, MMX test, stress test, prime number generation test and SSE tests on the processor.

Step 4: Once all the tests are done, you will see the results in the browser. Scroll down the page to see all carried out tests.
