Microsoft blocked the Windows 10 Creators Update on old PCs running on Intel Clover Trail Atom processors. In case you are unfamiliar, these were initially designed for the first 2-in-1 Windows 8 devices launched back in 2013 just after the company launched a few Windows RT devices running on ARM processors.

Windows 10 as a Service

Microsoft considers Windows 10 as a service. The company is now committed to supporting all Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs upgraded to Windows 10 for the supported lifetime of the devices. On the other hand, the company can support these devices with regular Windows 10 updates if PC manufacturers keep releasing new drivers for these old PCs.

Back in April, Microsoft confirmed that four Intel Clover Trail processors couldn’t support Windows 10 Creators Update. These are Z2760, Z2580, Z2560, and Z2520. At that time, the company promised that it would work with its partners to provide some compatible drivers for the processors.

Change of plans

Unfortunately, Microsoft changed plans since then, as Intel no longer supports these processors. In other words, all devices using Intel Clover Trail Atom processors are now stuck on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Microsoft will provide security updates for these devices until January 2023.

This is the first time that Microsoft is extending the support period of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for particular devices. Windows as a Service will work if the company’s hardware partners will keep supporting the old devices. And for now, we can see that Intel is not willing to do this for some older processors.

Users who own devices equipped with these older Intel Clover Trail processors will still be able to use them until January 2023. The downside is that they won’t receive any new features and updates from Microsoft.
