We were wondering why Microsoft didn’t showcase Crackdown 3 at E3 2016, and were hoping for it to be shown at Gamescom later in the year with a 2016 release date. Unfortunately, while we may see more of it at Gamescom, it won’t be releasing this year.

Crackdown 3 has officially been pushed back into 2017. Microsoft has yet to unveil a solid date, so it is possible a late 2017 might be what the company is aiming for.

All this is no surprise: there was always Crackdown 3 would be delayed due to the technology Microsoft is using to get the game up and running. This is a multiplayer focused game after all, and it will be the first to take advantage of the software giant’s cloud architecture in a big way.

While we’re not happy about the delay, if it makes for a much better game in the long run then we’re all for it. We hope it doesn’t experience another delay and if it is destined for a late 2017 release, then we’d love for it to become an Xbox Scorpio launch title.

Outside of the delay, the development team confirmed that Crackdown 3 will support Xbox Play Anywhere when released.

Here’s what the team had to say:

The team should top it off by allowing cross-platform multiplayer functionality.

Crackdown 3 is a game built for the future with a multiplayer experience that will redefine what it feels like to play games, and as we continue to work on this, it has become clear that our original timeline of delivering multiplayer to fans this summer, while maintaining the size, scope and quality of the game, would be challenging. Our top priority is to give gamers an experience they have never seen before at a scale never thought possible, and sticking to our original timeline would have compromised that goal.
