What is “Block?

Blocks is a software designed by Google that allow you to easily create 3D objects in virtual reality and is independent of your modelling experience. Right now, VR is just an innovation but with this app, it could be turned into a serious art.

But you must own an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive to enter the world of virtual reality and use ‘Block’. The app is simple enough to be used by anyone including people who’re totally new to 3D animation/modeling. Perhaps, the greatest thing about this app is that it offers you the ability to design your wonderful creations in the way they were meant to be created–in 3D space.

“Blocks” is not the first 3D model based app that lets you draw pictures for real and that too without a computer screen. The first one was Quill and Medium for the Oculus Rift, then came Google’s Tilt Brush along with Gravity Sketch VR. And now, we have Google’s Block, a 3D model VR app that turns your Oculus Rift or HTC Vive into a 3D model developer within your 3D world.

Features

When you attempt to draw a virtual reality based masterpiece on a computer, you cannot configure the way it will look in VR. But with “Blocks” you can design and draw objects while wearing the headset.  Also, the app offers simple tools that allow you to shape, draw and modify your creations without even touching a mouse or keyboard. The app is available for free on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Some of its features are listed below.

  • Export objects from the app and view them online.
  • Put them in 3D scenes inside and outside virtual reality.
  • On Google’s website, spin objects around to create animated GIFs that can be downloaded.
  • Export art from both Tilt Brush and Blocks and use them together.

With Google’s Blocks, sky is the limit for your creativity as it has more uses than you are imagining. For instance, if you into animations, with Blocks, you can quickly create a concept and export it for animation. From 3D graphics creation to building models for 3D printer, there is nothing you cannot innovate with Blocks.

The interface of the app has six basic tools i.e. Paint, Shape, Modify, Grab, Stroke and Erase-to design models. They can be shared via link or as .obj export and animated gif.
